Athyrium
filix-femina
Lady fern
Lady
fern has the stereotypical fern appearance:
large, arching, lacy-cut fronds that grow in clumps. One variant has
reddish stems that contrast nicely with the green foliage. The
fiddleheads in the spring are covered with characteristic black scales.

Sun:
part to full shade
Soil: rich loam, neutral to acidic
Moisture: moist to wet
Height: 1-3 feet
Uses: Can be used individually as a specimen
plant or in drifts as groundcover. The frond stems are easily broken,
so the plants require some protection from wind and errant children,
toys, and dogs. Tattered-looking fronds can be cut to the ground, and
new ones will soon appear.
