Dryopteris
carthusiana
Spinulose wood fern
Spinulose
wood fern has the appearance that
typifies ferns: lacy-cut fronds that grow in discrete clumps. The
sturdy fronds can stay upright and green for much of the winter. In
spring, the plant produces dense clusters of large fiddleheads.

Sun:
part to full shade
Soil: rich loam, neutral to acidic
Moisture: consistently moist
Height: 1½-2½ feet
Uses: Best as a specimen plant, especially
nestled right up next to the trunk of a tree, where the dark, rough
bark provides a nice contrast to the green, lacy fronds. This is a
low-maintenance plant that tends not to spread or need division of the
clumps.
